F.A.T. Podcast Episode 74 – Will Cleveland and Rochester Real Beer Week
On this episode of the Food About Town podcast, Will Cleveland from the D&C came over to the studio to do our recap of this year’s Rochester Real Beer Week, our favorites from the awesome Expo event and talk through the regional beer scene. Also check out his new article about the opening of the new mega craft brewery in Canandaigua, Young Lion.
This episode is brought to you by Phrank.ly. Phrankly is working to make sourcing and distribution for restaurants, farms and speciality goods more transparent and change the way people find their food.
Very happy to have Will stop by to chat and making this recap of the Real Beer Week an annual tradition. Before we get too far into the details, I just wanted to thank Joe McBane, the Tap and Mallet and the whole Expo team for throwing another fantastic event. It really seemed like the whole crowd and the vendors had a great time and everybody got to enjoy unique beers and some beautiful weather.
Some of our favorites were:
Highway Manor – Funky Prowler – Sour Irish Stout
Jack’s Abby – 3x Dry Hopped Hoponius Union – huge hop aromas while maintaining a relatively light profile
Upland – Cherry Lambic – huge cherry flavor but light and mid sour
Prison City – Riot in Columbia and a Raspberry/ginger/lime zest wheat blonde
Omnipollo Barrel-aged NOA Pecan Mud Cake Stout – aroma is butter pecan ice cream, round big Stout flavor, so rich with nut flavor
Grimm – Cloudbusting DIPA – thought it was more balanced than the Tesseract I had that day
Foley Brothers – Fair Maiden VT DIPA – textbook example of a Vermont style DIPA soon to be available in our market
Singlecut – Jenny Said DIPA – regularly available DIPA that hits almost everyone of my go to notes, just a bare sweetness, resin, smooth and enough bitterness to balance
Joe Bean Coffee – Partial Sun – nitro cold brew coffee

Through the rest of our talk, we hit on a bunch of other topics including:
Food from the Expo (big win from McCann’s, Swan’s Market and Le Petit Poutine), Tap and Mallet‘s NE IPA showcase competition
New local breweries in smaller towns in the area
Surprising popularity and controversy of the Genesee tanks moving down the Erie Canal
Upcoming opening of Young Lion and success of Iron Tug
New distro in Rochester and talk about some of the breweries in Toronto including Will’s current beer crush, Bellwoods
Thanks so much for Will coming over again and I’m looking forward to catching up with him soon on the Rochester beer scene.
